Lovecraft Ezine Issue # 7 October 2011

Happy Birthday to me! I woke up this morning and was excited to receive on my Kindle, Lovecraft E-zine’s Issue # 7. I geeked out this morning reading a couple of this issues great story selections. Head editor, Mike Davis, has created one hell of a Lovecraftian fan base, and with the recent stamp of approval  from S.T. Joshi, a leading Lovecraft scholar, more and more people are getting turned on to the E-zine.

Intriguing tales this month are; Sky Full of Fire by Corinna Sara Bechko, The Lord of Endings by John R. Fultz, Loaners by Aaron Polson, The Prophecy of Zarah by Jenne Kaivo, and The Stranger From Out of Town by John Prescott.

Seriously folks check these out and chuck Mike a donation to help the continuation of this excellent source for Lovecraftian horror. I signed up for the monthly Kindle subscription, and I highly suggest everyone else do the same. Cheers!

The Drabblecast ~ #218 "Orange" by Susan Forest

Art by Rodolfo Arrendondo

Pucker up boys and girls because this week Drabblecast features – “Orange” by, Susan Forest. This great tale, read by Norm Sherman and R.E. Chambliss, shares a similar them following last week’s story, “Followed” by, Will McIntosh. Both pointing out the negativity that our humanity can inhibit, “Orange”, goes a further by comparing our sapient race to parasites or fungus that eats our savory, juicy, and plump planet to destruction.

The story revolves around a series of events that take place during an apocalyptic time. Although it is never described what is happening to Earth, we get the sense of panic and urge to survive from the characters as they all find ways to leave by esape-pods. In between these little scenes of characters trying to escape the crumbling planet, the story breaks into a separate narrative of someone who takes stop motion images of oranges. Sounds weird at first, but as each little scene of the actual apocalypse happens, I got the sense that the stop image narrative was the real story. In the final image; the orange, starting of perfect in color and shape, is grey and blue, covered with a silvery sheen of fungus that has engulfed the entire fruit. As the photographer looks close they see tiny towers of black and blue, and notes how they send little puffs of silver dust out into the open space around it to spread the fungus.

It was in the description of that final image that I realized that as the fungus leaves for a new host, so do the humans in the story. Shot into open space to land where ever landing is possible and healthy habitat is available. I wouldn’t call it a twist, you can feel it heading this way through the story, but it’s a great way to reflect on the story on a whole and get a great point across. With every beginning there is an end my friends. What do you think? If you haven’t heard this episode yet, hit up Drabblecast on iTunes or where ever podcasts are available for download and give her a listen.

A few words about the episode and the Author of “Oranges”; Susan Forest is a member of the SFWA (Science Fiction Writers Association), and was awarded The Children’s Circle Choice Book award for her young adult novel, “The Dragon Prince”. Drabble this week of course by Chris Monroe, who one last year’s Best Drabble of the Year, on Drabblecast. Winner of this week’s twabble was J.R. Good stuff.

Ghostbusters Back in Theaters October 13th

Ray, if someone asks you if you like Ghostbusters you say YES! The boys are gonna be back on the big screen for a one night showing at many theaters across the U.S. It’s been over 27 years since we started to believe them, and watched as they not once, but twice saved the great city of New York, and the world for that matter.

Rumor is that this is sort of a taste tester to see how the public these days feel about the Ghostbusters franchise, and to see if they should green light the third installment. In my opinion one night isn't the best way to test it, especially with all these re-releases coming out in 3-D. I think the whole 3-D fad is over-rated, but I have to admit that to watch a proton stream, ghost trap, or just plain ghost would be awesome in 3-D. I just get the scene in my head of when Slimmer slimes Venkman in the Sedgewick Hotel.

All in all I am very excited to check out my child hood heroes on the big screen since I was a year shy of being born when it came out. Now like a said 27 years later, it would be nice to see a Ghostbusters3, and I hope they get what their looking for in ticket sales. So make sure you bring your ghoulish friends and family, which brings me to my next question; Who you gonna call?

HPPodcraft.com – Episode #92 – The Man of Stone

Finally we have some ladies in the house with Lovecraft! Hazel Heald jumps on the Lovecraftian bandwagon this week as Chris and Chad cover "The Man of Stone". A tale penned a little differently than most HPL stories, "The Man of Stone" certainly shines of Hazels hand as well. A great read that you can check out free here!

Great reading done by fan of the show, Brother Voodoo. Further news, the race to collect money for a full reading of "The Call of Cthulhu" by Andrew Leman is over. And the boys sound like they have plans for a Halloween release. But just because the fundraiser for the reading is over, doesn't mean you can't still DONATE to keep the show going further. Great job guys!

In two weeks the guys return with "The Horror in the Museum", another Lovecraft/Heald mash-up.

Space Chickens On the Run

A new nebulous cloud of gas and newborn stars that lie about 6,500 light years away, are getting some attention this week as Astronomers dub this one the "Running Chicken". Somewhere in this connect the dots light bright, they thought they saw a fleeing fowl.

The picture, taken from the Wide Field Imager, on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope in Chile, was snapped September 21st and shares the location with the Centaurus constellation. I don't see it, but either way it is a beautiful picture.

HPPodcraft.com – Episode #91 – Dreams in the Witch House pt. 3

Wow didn't see this one creep by me. Finishing up this week, Chris, Chad, and Ken Hite tunnel through the end of this story and reveal some pretty gruesome and heart breaking stuff. I've read this story and didn't particularly care for it, but like usual, after hearing the guys discuss this and go through the finer points I missed, I really liked this one folks.

The delivery of this tale makes the skin crawl and the mind feverish as H.P.L unravels the fibers of reality and makes anyone believe that the bad guys don't need a front door to get you and sometimes there is no escaping the horror.

Close to $600 left in the race to raise R'lyeh, we can do it!
